Rethinking Harassment Prevention: Lessons from Weinstein, Fox News, Uber and More...

In June 2016, after an 18 month study, the EEOC called on organizations to “reboot” their harassment prevention efforts. Since then, the topic of sexual harassment has been in the news frequently, with many high profile cases, a #MeToo social media movement, and Silence Breakers as TIME's Person of the Year. This presentation will look at what led the EEOC to offer this challenge, and why every organization should re-examine their efforts to prevent harassment and discrimination in the workplace.  We will look at how culture and leadership affect prevention efforts, how respectful workplace and diversity and inclusion principles should affect our response, how training can impact prevention, and what we can do to encourage any needed changes.  We will look at what types of systemic changes might be needed, including policy and process changes, vulnerable workplaces, accountability, and investigative processes. The goal of this presentation is to encourage organizational leaders to look critically at their own systems, and begin a strategic process of making needed changes to establish an effective prevention system, so that the next headline is not yours.
